“A River Runs Through Us” New

20" x 24" -- $400* Mixed media

This work evolved as I worked on the painting and a river moved its way forward. The title came to me as I was working with the understanding that we are part of nature. Mother Earth sustains us and gives us our life.

“Deep and Wide” New

After a camping experience and being out in nature, there is such an immensity to it and presents to us a different perspective.

“The Kachinas Are Coming” New

The prospect of creation has been a theme for me for a long time, and as I worked on the painting, the wonder of how kachinas are presented as coming into our world came to me.

“Sundancers” New

I was honored in being able to attend a Sundance this past summer. The drumming and dancing continued in my head and these dancers appeared on the canvas. It was my wish to give the impression of this loving experience.

“The Bear in the Sun” New

“Grandmother Teach Me How to Dance” New

9" x 12" -- $300* Mixed media  Prints available

This face came out at me. It was a call to an elder by someone who has lost their rhythm with life. The person began to have a dialogue with me, but I do not know who it is and whether they are male or female. The buffalo also, presented itself. The buffalo stands in the North direction in the Lakota way and honors the tribe, giving all of oneself for the good of the whole.

“We Are Stardust...” New

30" x 40" -- $800* Mixed media  Prints available

After the washes were put down in the first step of the work, the concept of space seemed to be there. A friend had sent me these words from a song by Joni Mitchell several months past, but when I looked at the beginning of the painting, I began singing the song.

“Apache Dancers”

30” X 40” - $1,200 Mixed Media -   Prints available

This piece evolved over several months. It was a new idea to work larger and when I began, I was not sure where it would go.

I began with the washes, calling in the Ancient Ones, who appeared as the lights that happened in the washes. I wanted it to be about the horse, which I had seen as my animal totem several months past. The horse stands for power, and I had seen myself as the horse standing alone on a mesa. Oftentimes, we see ourselves as a certain totem, but we are uncertain as to what this exactly means for us. We then get to live our adventure to know what that will mean. It is always an individual experience.

The horse has moved around on the canvas as I developed the painting and felt that something should go in the bottom of the canvas. I had seen Apache dancers in the past and have lived in their environment for some time. It came to me to add them in the bottom of the painting. It evolved to make it night with the firelight, the mystery time for visions and dreams.

"Heyokah and the Bear"

9" x 12" -- $450* Mixed media

Prints available

There are these wonderful ceramic “Heyokahs” at the Heard Museum and I talk to them each time I go there. Heyokahs are tricksters and teach by playing tricks on those they come in contact with. I was trying to bring that memory forward and the bear also, appeared on the canvas. The bear represents bringing the subconscious to the conscious and also, the power of the West.
After I painted this painting, I got to meet and know a Heyokah on a personal level.

"Mother Earth" New  SOLD: Prints only available

20" x 24" -- $950* Mixed media

This piece could also be called "as above, so below" and was commissioned. The idea came to me after the first washes were done. After beginning this piece it was brought to my attention that a portion of the beautiful, priceless land of the Tonto National Forest with its magnificent red rocks of this area, is to be traded for mining and will not be available for public access.
I consider this land to be sacred and the realization that it is to be damaged has left me heart-sick. From this understanding, the painting carries a new meaning for the value and gratitude for all that Mother Earth has given us.

The idea for this painting came about when I saw a dear friend standing in the cold on a dreary cloudy day. She stands alone in the cold showered by silver and represents a hard test for each of us.

"Deer Dancer" Mixed Media on paper- 25 1/2” X 35” - $ $900*.

"Chanupa"

The term “Chanupa” in the Sioux language means the “Tree of Life” and represents the pipe. In this painting the woman’s body becomes the tree. Her hair becomes the rocks and water, and the wolves represent her teachers.
By being a “pipe holder”, she becomes one with all nature, life and time.

“Sunflowers” - 50” X 36” - diptych (each measuring 24” X 36” ) - acrylic on canvas- $1,500*. Sold

These were inspired by photos taken of my garden in San Simon, Arizona. See this diptych displayed in Carolyn's gallery.

“Horses on the Wind” - 2003 - Mixed Media, acrylic on canvas- 12” X 16” -( matted and framed) - $250*. ORIGINAL: SOLD Prints only available.

These horses came prior to a time when I went to the Chiricahuas to set up a wheel and do a healing ceremony on the land. I was gathering cedar and walking up a wash. Suddenly, I heard thundering horses running on the ridge above my head. I realized that real horses couldn’t run in that area, because of fencing and rough terrain. These had been spirit horses.
When I returned from the trip, I realized that I had painted these horses and riders, before I had heard them.

"The Bear and the Buffalo "- 9” X 12” - Mixed Media, acrylic on canvas- $300*. Original: Sold  Prints Only

"Dreamtime" 28 1/2” X 36” (matted and framed)- Mixed Media on paper- $950*. ORIGINAL: SOLD Prints only available.

This was a painting done , where I was trying to allow the paint and shapes to direct the work. I saw angels, spirits and fish, swimming with the female figure in a golden stream.

"Calling in the Ancient Ones" 2003 - 12” X 16” (mixed media, acrylic on canvas) $250*.

The Ancient Ones are the forms we see drawn on rocks throughout the Southwest. They are as figures and also, as stars, and they are still with us. The Heyokah is the dancing figure above in the left hand corner, showing us the joke in life. There is the deer dancer, moving to his own rhythm with his own life. The Ancient Ones are present, along with the running horse that can be heard in the silence of the wind and is the power moving.

"Circles of Time" 2003 - 9” X 12” - Mixed Media, acrylic on canvas- $170*.  SOLD

This work represents the creation myth of life coming through as a mandala. Life comes from the strike of lightening, along with the Ancient Ones, the buffalo and the remains of bones.

“Self Portrait” - 26” X 26” (matted and framed) - Watercolor - $850*.

This was the first piece done where the assignment was painting ourselves as animals. A Polaroid photo was taken and we were to find animals that seem to fit us. The experience helped me to open up after many years of feeling that there wasn’t any need to paint and that I wasn’t good enough.

“My Mother’s Hands” - 28 1/2” X 36” (matted and framed) - Watercolor - $750*.

My sister and I had a show honoring our mother and this was my contribution to the show. It came about from and old black and white photo of my mother and I set her in a field of sunflowers.

She loved all kinds of flowers. Too, the night after her funeral, I saw her in a dream, as an eagle and she lifted off to fly free.

“Genesis” - 20 1/4” X 27 3/4” - (matted and framed) - Gouache - $575*.

For some reason I have been interested over a long period of time in the idea of creation and what it must look like. This is one of my ideas about it.

“Kachina Dancing” - 20 1/4” X 27 3/4” - (matted and framed) - Gouache/Silver Leaf - $550*.

This piece is about the flow of energy that dances.

“Mandala” - 16” X 20 1/2” - (matted and framed) - Gouache - $450*.

A mandala is used for centering one’s energy. It can be reflected upon during a meditation. This is my concept of that idea.

“First Memory” - 26” X 21” - Watercolor on paper- $800*.

This painting was an assignment where the teacher wanted us to paint people as animals and included for us to paint our first memory.
My first memory was not a pleasant one, but of my father giving me a whipping with a belt for wetting the bed. I saw him as a raven, because he was very handsome, tall with dark hair. He became bigger than life to me in that situation, and he is perched at the foot of the bed with my eye in his beak. Later, I learned that the raven is magic, but that magic can be good or bad.
“Family Portrait” - watercolor

This painting was another of class projects with the assignment of presenting people as animals, doing a family portrait.
I painted my immediate family - my husband is the chameleon, my son is the gold fish and I am the spider. I had noticed how my husband’s eyes and mannerisms are somewhat like a lizard. I thought of my son as swimming in and out of our lives, brilliant gold, beautiful and evasive. Later on, I learned that in Chinese mythology the oldest son is represented by the goldfish. I have been a weaver, love the fiber arts, and am always dreaming up new and different things. The spider represents creativity and weaving. Too, I love to quilt and eyelet lace and put those things in the background of this piece. With this painting, I realized that objects don’t necessarily have to be in actual relationship. This was a magic moment for me to change the proportion of things, and now it is still interesting to see the relationship that I put these in.
