Even though Carolyn was raised in the south, she has lived in the southwest for over twenty years. Both environments have contributed to her artistic growth, providing a rich heritage that can be seen in her love for diverse cultures and people, as well as nature, color and design.
Carolyn has a Bachelors of Visual Arts from Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia and a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. She has done continual study in art therapy and with noted portrait artist, Roberta Carter Clark.
An artist's observations about Carolyn Gray's work.

She has taught art for most of her life, and includes through her life, Sedona Art Center, Yavapai College, University of Arizona, Pima Community College, Tucson Association for the Blind, and public school, where she taught English as well.

A life of service has been her life’s priority, which has been evident through teaching; and now she has incorporated her spiritual values by working with Doreen Virtue, obtaining an ATP (Angel Therapy Practitioner) Certification.

Previously, she was led to do realistic portraits of individuals with their animal totems and spirit guides. Her portraiture work has been done in Scottsdale, Bisbee and Sedona, Arizona; Atlanta, Georgia; Carmel and San Jose, California. Her work has been called “Medicine Art” because of the intent that it be a healing tool for indiviuals.

Her work is inspired through her deep belief and honoring of the Native American tradition. This work incorporates the direction from Spirit, presenting combinations of symbols of the Ancient Ones, the Medicine Wheel along with the animal totems. She begins her work with free flowing washes, and later the images make themselves known. These are painted in an abstract and free style, using mixed media with acrylic paint on canvas, but she allows Spirit to direct her work.

This has become a new and exciting method to Carolyn, because of the mystery and challenge of where Spirit is taking her art work. The direction of Spirit has become her major focus and direction. However, she makes Native American ceremonial implements, incorporating her love of handwork with beads.

She is available for ceremonial healing, making personalized shields, medicine bags, as well as custom portraits, which are done by appointment. Also, she offers workshops for teaching art, making prayer ties and constructing medicine wheels.
